As Hurricane Gustav nears the Gulf Coast, the effects of the storm are being felt in St. Paul, Minnesota. Planners of the Republican National Convention are currently meeting to discuss Plan B, and are scheduled to hold a press conference at 4 p.m. ET.
It had been announced earlier on Sunday that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney would skip the RNC. Memories of a poorly handled Hurricane Katrina three years ago obviously still hang over the White House, causing them to be perhaps extra sensitive to the current situation in Louisiana.
Suggested contingency plans had included changing the tone of the celebration, the schedule of events, or the length of the convention.
"I pledge that tomorrow night, and if necessary, throughout our convention ... to act as Americans, not Republicans, because America needs us now no matter whether we are Republican or Democrat,'' Republican presidential nominee John McCain said on Sunday.
One predominant theme of the GOP convention was to be "service," a message that could be actually put into action by holding a blood drive, raising funds, or by sending convention volunteers down to the Gulf Coast.
The business of nominating John McCain and Sarah Palin for president and vice president is required by GOP rules. This process is reported to be able to be done in a couple of hours.
